Preparing the Family for Disasters
Typhoon, storm, flood, and other natural and man-made phenomenon do occur anywhere at any time. While we cannot always avoid them, being prepared can help lessen the effects of these disasters on us. Getting ready for a disaster is very simple and there are easy steps we should take to ensure we do not fall victim to disaster.

 

Prepare an Emergency Kit – Prepare a kit of emergency supplies that will allow the whole family to survive for at least three days in the event an emergency happens. The emergency kit should include basic items like water, food, battery-powered radio, extra batteries, flashlight and a first aid kit.

 

Make a Plan – Plan ahead what the whole family should do in an emergency. The plan should include a communications plan and address sheltering-in-place and evacuation. We will be better prepared to safely reunite our family during an emergency if we plan ahead and communicate with others in advance.

 

Be Well-Informed – Know more about the different threats that could affect your community and the appropriate way to respond to them. Moreover, learn about the emergency plans that have been established in your community. Talk to your neighbors about how you can work together in the event of an emergency.

 

Get Yourself Involved – After preparing yourself and the whole family for possible emergencies, it is best to take some training in first aid and emergency response, and get involved in preparing your community.

 

Now that we have prepared the whole family for incoming disasters, and while we have a fine weather, let us enjoy the day. Gather the whole family in the living room; take out those old board games from the cabinet like Grandpa’s backgammon and whoop it up.
